In the modern era, there is an importance in making connections and utilizing social media to make sure you stand out from the crowd. Social media does not have to be for only following the cute animals or reading on tonight's dinner recipes. We understand it can be overwhelming and how do you get yourself out there?

NETWORKING TIPS FOR WOMEN ENTERING THE WORKFORCE

1) Share an online portfolio or resume on social media
​
You have your resume and cover letters but are not getting the attention you were hoping for? Try sharing your cover letters on social media sites like Facebook or LinkedIn. Social media sites are evolving to show you more than just what friends or your followed groups are posting.

LinkedIn, for example, is tailored for professional networking and job searching. Follow your model entrepreneurs or businesses to get an idea as to what they are looking for. In addition, you can even make new connections with people in the field or have experience you want.

Also, it is important to keep your profile up to date. Otherwise, employers may not know what your looking for or what experiences you have.

2) Edit the privacy settings on your social media
​
Social Media can be used for searching for jobs or researching potential employers. However, the same goes for employers too! So remember to adjust your privacy settings on all social media accounts otherwise, a potential employer might see what you did last weekend.
​
3) Be unique and express yourself
​
Being online does not mean you have to follow a cookie cutter pattern. You want to be able to express yourself and show your employers who you are. If you don't, you might not be able to determine if you are a good fit for the company. It is okay to express yourself. Just keep it professional and make sure you're okay showing the content to your parents or kids.

4) Request to meet for coffee
​
Online connections do not have to stop there. Did you find someone that interest you online? Ask to meet for coffee! This gives you a chance to gain further insights into the position and employer that you cannot find online. This allows gives you the opportunity to stand out as you will probably be able to express yourself and make yourself memorable.

Also, if you are nervous, it can be a good idea to come up with a few questions beforehand so that the conversation never ends. Some questions might be "Why do you enjoy working at XYZ company?" or "Can you provide any insights on the interview process or the type of candidates they normally hire?"
​
5) Update yourself on current events
​
Keeping updated on current events helps you initiates and maintain conversations when you're networking with people. This shows future employers that you understand what is going in the world and able to provide an opinion. In addition, being updated means that you might have an understanding on how current events can affect your potential employer.
